I WEAVE 2016

“I weave” is a 4-day performance, which took place during Hala symposium 2016 in Trenčín, in former Merina, a textile factory founded by the Tiberghien brothers in 1906. I wove 6 hours on average every day to commemorate the production of textiles as well as the people who were employed there and lost their jobs as it officially closed down in 2009. The factory started with 13134 spindles and 294 looms, later replaced by machines.

The finished product is a plain meditative weave, interrupted with interwoven found pieces of old cloth produced in Merina, old and new photographs of Merina, old, hand-drawn textile patterns, Merina’s own newspaper from the 1980s, as well as hair of other symposium participants.
